Poll tax exemption certificates, 1918-1966.

Upon application to the probate judge, certain classes of people, primarily veterans or military personnel, were exempt from payment of the poll tax (see Ala. Code 51-238 [1958 Recompiled]). This series consists of certificates of exemption and include the name of the county, the certificate number, name of person exempted, military service number, and voting precinct or beat. This record began in ca. 1918 and was discontinued in 1966.
